Finding a Compact Datalogging Solution
Simplicity, preset triggering events, and the versatility of the digital display make the PocketLOGGER ZT an excellent choice for tuning enthusiasts looking for data logging software that that is economical and easy-to-use.  Only the lack of color and minimal font availability lessen the appeal of this datalogging software, which is otherwise a superior product.

Designed to interface with the Zeitronix ZT-2 Wideband Air/Fuel Meter system, the PocketLOGGER ZT is serious tuning software for enthusiasts.  Before its introduction, the ability to view the information provided by the Zeitronix ZT-2 was limited to two devices: Laptop PC software or an optional LCD display, both made by Zeitronix.  While both options offered certain benefits, the optional LCD display lacked the logging capability of the laptop, and the laptop lacked the size and shape that made the LCD display the more convenient option of the two.

Digital Tuning improved the compatibility of this software to ensure that it works with a wide variety of handhelds. Additional required hardware includes a serial HotSync cable and a direct connection with the ZT-2 unit itself, both of which must be separately purchased from Zeitronix.  Digital Tuning can also supply the HotSync cable if you do not have one; many models now come only with a USB HotSync cable.  The PocketLOGGER was developed with several important anti-piracy features.  One such feature required us to carefully follow specific registration instructions to marry the software to our particular hardware.

Getting the Right Hardware
The price of Palm OS handhelds has dropped over the last few years, making them more affordable to enthusiasts who are working within a budget.  If you buy a Palm unit for the specific purpose of using this software, we recommend the following two features:

First, a backlight will be very helpful for the first drive at night.

Second, if you like to log significant amounts of data, make sure you have a decent battery supply, like a rechargeable battery to keep you sane throughout the data logging process.

Getting to the Features List
Introductions aside, the PocketLOGGER ZT is packed full of cool features.  The trigger feature is clever and probably the most useful to the average enthusiast.  The user can specify a trigger event or value that causes the software to automatically begin recording a log.  Enthusiasts can select among a wide variety of parameters that the ZT-2 monitors (e.g. Boost, RPM, Throttle position, etc) when specifying their trigger events.  For example, a user may set an RPM value as the trigger event.  When the engine’s RPM reaches the specified value, the PocketLOGGER automatically begins recording.  Enthusiasts can now log to their heart’s content without the risk of injury that could occur when looking down to manually activate the device to begin data logging.

The creators of the PocketLOGGER also developed a “Tap Anywhere” option to counter this risk.  This option allows the user to initiate the manual recording function simply by tapping anywhere on the handheld’s screen to begin logging, further reducing the chance an enthusiast might look down to activate the device while driving.

Using the Software
Another feature offered by the PocketLOGGER ZT is an alarm feature.  The alarm provides the user with an audio warning when any given parameter is exceeded.  As with the Trigger, it can be any one of the parameters monitored by the device.  This may be used as an audible “shift-light”, an EGT warning, or a warning of overboost.  It is built-in as a means of helping you to drive your vehicle safely while maximizing your motor’s potential.

The display is both simple and elegant.  In real-time display mode, the numbers are large and easily readable.  Displayed in a smaller font below the readouts are peak-and-hold and trough-and-hold values .  The software provided by Zeitronix for the PC Laptop is also accurate and valuable for tuning, but next to impossible to read as a gauge while driving.  If a laptop is used, a driver should not hit the brakes too hard because this action may catapult your laptop into the dash; so we recommend properly securing your laptop in the event you decide to use it in your vehicle for this purpose.

Functionality to Go
Enthusiasts can select from two choices for the display readout.  One view displays the information as a digital gauge cluster  (with up to four values at a time), while the other view displays the information in a graph format.  Either way an enthusiast views the information, the log is retained in graph form and is available for future review at any time.  The PocketLOGGER also produces log files that can be reviewed later, making it that much more potent as a tuning tool on the go.

Not only is the software user friendly, but it is also highly effective as a tuning tool.  The PocketLOGGER ZT incorporates the better of two worlds for datalogging without requiring a buyer to shell out the serious money required for some of the more sophisticated tuning systems available on the market.   In our opinion, when it comes to available tuning and monitoring platforms, the PocketLOGGER ZT stands as one of the top data logging software products available to enthusiasts today.
